Pastor Paul & Karen love to get outside and enjoy
the
"Rails to Trails"
....and
if the trail is far enough away, to stay in a State park.

Some quick tips for you as you start biking:

** You will experience some "seat" discomfort the first time you ride. Don't let that stop you, it only lasts one or two times and then your body will get accustomed to it.
**Be sure to take plenty of water or sports drinks with you, as hydration is so important.
**Don't go too far out on the trail thinking you don't feel tired = remember, you have to turn around and come back.
**It's good to have an air pump and patch kit with you.

We're blessed to have so many beautiful trails in Pennsylvania.
One of the longest is in our own backyard, starting at McKeesport and going the whole way to Washington, D.C.  Find a trailhead in most of the towns along the trail, get on it and head in either direction.  What you'll find is beauty, serenity, nature, and time to praise the God who created it.

Pastor Paul & Karen have biked every mile of the Great Allegheny Passage at one time or another.  This trail goes through towns like West Newton, Connellsville, Meyersdale, Frostburg, MD., through the beautiful Ohiopyle State park, Cedar Creek park, past long gone, but still visible remnants of coke ovens, once bustling mine towns and historical sites, across the Salisbury Viaduct, through the long "Big Savage tunnel" and all the while you're on one of the most beautiful, green trails anywhere.

Standing on the Mason/Dixon line on the Heritage rail/trail, Maryland.

Some web sites for trails (not a comprehensive list, just some ideas):

Camping, Parks & Activities:

Web sites for state parks:  www.state.pa.us or
www.dcnr.state.pa.us

Web site for PA camping: www.Pacamping.com

Or join your local AAA at: www.aaa.com

Two great books filled with info on PA. outdoor fun:

Pursuits magazine - Pennsylvania outdoor activities

Pennsylvania travel guide  www.visitPA.com ask for a copy.

NEED A LOT OF MONEY TO ENJOY THIS STUFF?

Nope. Our used pop-up cost us $350.00.  Bikes about $200-$300. (don't go too cheap on these, you're comfort depends on it!)  Most state parks are about 19.00 a night. The fun, relaxation, quiet time with the LORD and family building time -  PRICELESS!

Some of the Baer's favorite trails:

  • Ghost Town Trail in Dilltown (now goes the whole way to Ebensburg.)
  • Heritage Trail in York, PA, crosses into Maryland. (We camp out at the beautiful Codorus State park.)
  • Butler-Freeport Trail - lots of memories for us since we grew up in Freeport.
  • Gettysburg-bike through this historical park!
  • Lancaster-again just bike on the many Amish countryside roads.
  • Allegheny River Trail (beautiful asphalt trail along the Allegheny river.)
  • Samuel Justis Trail which takes you right to the Drake Oil well museum. (asphalt & great for homeschoolers!)
  • Swatara Trail near Harrisburg-if you like to be in the middle of nowhere, you'll love this trail!)
  • GrandCanyon/Pine Creek Trail - WOW! PA Grand Canyon. Camp at the state park in Wellsboro.
  • Presque Isle in Erie is great fun!
  • North Bend, W. Va. - long trail with tunnels and bridges.

Verse of The Day - Comes from the NIV Bible
3 And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory." 4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.
  Isaiah 6:3-4
